The NDIS is going through some big changes this year and navigating this can feel like trying to solve a puzzle. Here’s a simple summary of what’s happening and what you need to know.
On 19 August 2026, Parliament passed the NDIS Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026.
This is the biggest set of changes to the NDIS in years, and it will roll out gradually between now and 2028.
Here’s what’s happening, based on the official NDIS rollout timeline.
The most important thing to know: you can keep using your current plan and supports as usual right now. If a change affects you, the NDIA has said it will let you know directly, with time and support to understand what’s happening.
Changes already in effect
Plan reassessment: Only NDIS participants, plan nominees or child representatives can now request a plan reassessment. This applies when there’s a significant, ongoing change to functional capacity and support needs or living, education, work or informal support arrangements. The NDIA now has 90 days to decide on any request. You can still ask for urgent or short-term changes through a plan variation. (link for more info)
Support pricing: The Minister for the NDIS can now set maximum prices for supports. There’s no change to current pricing yet – providers keep following existing pricing arrangements for now.
Changes coming soon
Record-keeping: New rules set how long records must be kept:
- 3 years for participants
- 5 years for nominees
- 7 years for providers
Keep your records – you may need to show that funding was used correctly.
Stronger compliance powers: The NDIA will have more power to request information and act on fraud or misuse. Providers can face penalties for not cooperating.
Automated processing: Some claims and payments may be processed by computer systems. “Oversight and safeguards will apply to all automated actions.” Decisions that need judgement – like plan decisions – will still be made by people.
From October 2026
Community participation funding reset: Budgets for social, civic and community participation, and capacity-building daily activities, will be gradually reset. This happens only when your plan is reassessed or renewed – not before, and not backdated. It rolls out over 12 months, starting 1 October 2026 for new or reassessed plans, and 1 February 2027 for renewals.
This does not affect funding for eating and drinking support, education, employment, or disability-related health supports.
If you have high, continuous 24-hour care needs, there’s a new plan variation option to protect essential support if your funding changes.
Plan suspensions: Plans can be suspended if a participant doesn’t respond to information requests- but only after at least 5 genuine attempts to contact you or your representative.
From December 2026
Providers must submit claims within 90 days of delivering a support.
What this means for you
Nothing changes today. Watch for NDIA contact ahead of your next plan reassessment or renewal, especially if you use community participation funding. Keep your records for at least 3 years.
